Amethyst

Amethyst is transparent purple quartz. It is mined in Brazil, Uruguay, Bolivia & Argentina as well as Zambia, Namibia and other African countries.

Purple has long been considered a royal colour so it is not surprising that amethyst has been so much in demand throughout history.  Fine amethysts are found in the British Crown Jewels & were also a favourite of Catherine the Great.

Amethyst ranges in colour from pale lilac to deep- purple. The pale colours are sometimes called ‘’Rose de France’’ and can be seen in Victorian jewellery .

The Greek word  ‘amethystos’ translates to ‘not drunken’.  Amethyst was considered to be a strong antidote against drunkeness which is why wine goblets were often carved from it!  The gemstone still symbolises sobriety.

Amethyst is the gemstone for February & Pisces
