Red Stone Challenge – What gem is that?

This month’s birthstone is the well known ruby but there are other red gemstones.

I labelled the boxes only with numbers as an activity for a group talk I gave, how many would you have guessed? If you had seen them described as a ruby in a piece of jewellery abroad would you even have doubted it?

I always advise against buying jewellery abroad as you don’t have the same cover or assurances as you would get here.  With larger rubies you would want an established laboratory certificate too – many jewellery will offer their own in-house certificates but of course they are not worth the paper they are printed on!

Always buy from a reputable, trusted source. If it sounds too good to be true… it is.
